Here is a statement regarding e-bike rules and regulations for the Threat Level Midnight Event:
Threat Level Midnight Event: E-Bike Rules and Regulations
To address inquiries regarding e-bike eligibility for the bike categories at the Threat Level Midnight Event, we are following the basic rules adopted by USA Cycling for competitive electric bicycle events.
The electric bikes permitted for competition are defined as Pedelecs" (pedal electrics), which utilize both pedaling and electric power.
For the Threat Level Midnight Event, we are adopting the Class 1 e-bike definition as the standard for entry. This ensures fair and regulated competition and aligns with the Consumer Products Safety Council guidelines:
Class 1 E-Bike Requirements:
No Throttle: The bike must not have a throttle mechanism.
Pedaling System:Must have a freely operable pedaling system (rear-wheel drivetrain of pedals, crank, chain, and gear system).
Motor Power:750 watts or less motor power (manufacturer's label of compliance is the minimum standard).
Motor Engagement: Motor assistance engages only when the rider is actively pedaling.
Motor Cut-Off: Motor assistance cuts off at a maximum speed of 20 mph (32 km/h).
Additional Allowable Options:
Battery: A single battery is permitted.
Start Assist: Limited start assist (without pedaling) is allowed up to a maximum speed of 4 mph (6 km/h).
Participants are responsible for ensuring their e-bike meets these specifications prior to the event. Compliance checks will be made. We look forward to seeing you at the start line!
Events are subject to weather and trail conditions. Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. Promoter reserves the right to cancel/reschedule the event. Promoter reserves the right to change start times and distances if needed. For more info or questions please email: events@missourioffroadcyclists.com
